Brahms hatte als Jugendlicher nicht nur professionellen Klavierunterricht, so dass er schon bald als Pianist auftreten konnte, sondern lernte zudem das Cello- und Hornspiel.

Eine ähnliche Instrumentalerziehung hatte sein Förderer Robert Schumann mit Klavier-, Cello- und Flötenunterricht erhalten. So verwundert es nicht, dass wir in Brahms‘ Kammermusikschaffen auch zwei Cellosonaten finden und das Cello in seinem Doppelkonzert zusammen mit der Violine solistisch auftritt.

Schumann seinerseits schrieb für das Cello außer dem berühmten Solokonzert noch zwei Kompositionen mit Klavier: die Fünf Stücke im Volkston sowie (kurz vor seiner Erkrankung) fünf leider verschollene Romanzen. Somit eine logisch zusammenpassende Werkauswahl für dieses Album.
