Nicolay Myaskovsky war ein lebenslanger Freund von Prokofjew und wurde zu Lebzeiten häufig außerhalb der Sowjetunion aufgeführt. Heute ist er vor allem für seine 27 Symphonien bekannt. Seine lyrische und leidenschaftliche erste Cellosonate war eines seiner ersten wichtigen Werke, das er kurz nach Abschluss seines Studiums in St. Petersburg vollendete.
Die von Rostropowitsch uraufgeführte Zweite Cellosonate wurde unter Cellisten sofort populär, da sie auf fantasievolle Weise volksmusikalische Stile mit einer süßen Romantik verbindet, die an Tschaikowsky und Rachmaninow erinnert.
Das preisgekrönte Duo Kehayova und Miller schließt diese Aufnahme mit der perfekten Zugabe ab - Rimski-Korsakows melodiöser Serenade.
