Der zu Lebzeiten als »norddeutscher Schubert« bekannte Carl Loewe (1796-1869) ist heute vor allem als Komponist von Balladen in Erinnerung. Dabei gibt es ein beachtliches Werk an Klaviermusik, das in Inhalt, Ausdruck und Harmonie auffallend innovativ ist und die Keime von Ideen enthält, die später von Komponisten wie Wagner und Liszt aufgegriffen wurden. Loewe war zweifelsohne ein brillantes und originelles Talent, das die Epoche der Romantik maßgeblich einläutete.
