Johannes Brahms (1833-1896) nahm das musikalische Erbe seiner Zeit auf und integrierte es, ebenso wie J. S. Bach vor ihm. Die Musik von Brahms ist eng mit der von ihm geerbten deutsch-österreichischen Tradition verbunden und in ihr verwurzelt. Für Brahms war diese Tradition sehr lebendig und relevant; Er maß seine eigenen Anstrengungen ständig an den Leistungen von Bach, Haydn, Mozart und Beethoven und versuchte, ihrem Erbe gerecht zu werden und es fortzuführen. Er blickte nicht in die Vergangenheit zurück, sondern »fortschritt« (um die Terminologie von Schönbergs Aufsatz »Brahms der Fortschrittliche« zu verwenden) auf eine Vergangenheit zu, die noch nicht erfüllt war.

In der großen Kunst herrscht ein kostbares Gefühl der Unvermeidlichkeit, als ob jedes Meisterwerk genau so geschaffen werden sollte, wie es ist. Die Werke von Brahms sind erstaunlich organisch, akribisch kalkuliert und sehr menschlich zugleich. Diese Verschmelzung von Intellekt und Gefühl, Aufrichtigkeit und Zurückhaltung, tief empfundener Emotion und tadellosem Geschmack ist einzigartig für Brahms.
