Der ungarische Komponist Paul Abrahám feierte mit seinen »Jazz-Operetten« europaweit große Erfolge, nicht zuletzt im Weimarer Berlin, wo seine Werke für ein durch eine Jazzband verstärktes Orchester für Furore sorgten. Ball im Savoy mit seiner an die Fledermaus erinnernden Handlung und seiner Vielfalt an Einflüssen, die teils aus Europa, teils aus dem zeitgenössischen amerikanischen Populärlied stammen, erlangte einen Erfolg, wie ihn sonst nur Franz Lehár hatte. Die Uraufführung, die im Dezember 1932 stattfand, war für manche das letzte große kulturelle Ereignis der Weimarer Republik.
