Auf den ersten Blick scheinen der Leipziger Thomaskantor und der Dresdner Hofkapellmeister nichts gemein zu haben, doch weiß man, dass Bach die Musik des musikalischen Kosmopoliten sehr schätzte. Für den Blockflötisten Stefan Temmingh und den Countertenor Benno Schachtner war es daher besonders reizvoll, die Musik der beiden ungleichen Zeitgenossen nebeneinanderzustellen und die Vielfalt barocker Musik zu unterstreichen.
