Arrau erlangte vor allem als großer Beethoven-Interpret Berühmtheit und wird nicht minder für seine Werke von Mozart, Schubert, Chopin, Liszt, Schumann, Debussy und Brahms gefeiert.

Sein Verständnis für Kubelík war besonders tiefgreifend; der berühmte tschechische Dirigent vereinte die Großzügigkeit Bruno Walters, eines ebenso großen Mahlerianers, mit dem Format eines großen Symphonikers wie Eugen Jochum.
