Clara Wieck, die spätere Frau Schumann, schrieb ihre »Variations de concert sur la Cavatine du Pirate de Bellini« im späten Teenageralter: Ein äußerst virtuoser Variationen-Zyklus, der ihren Einfallsreichtum und ihr technisches Können demonstrierte. Theodor Döhler komponierte seine Nocturne über ein Thema aus Glinkas »Drei russischen Melodien« mit täuschend leisem Beginn, der sich zu einer Tour de Force steigert. Beide Stücke sind Adolf von Henselt gewidmet, der über Jahrzehnte dem russischen Klaviervirtuosentum wesentliche Impulse gab. Seine Zwölf Etüden op. 5 stellen einen romantisch-bravourösen Zyklus par excellence dar.
