Virgil Thomson (1896–1989) wurde in Kansas City, Missouri, geboren. In den 1930er Jahren verbrachte er viel Zeit in Paris, wo er James Joyce, Pablo Picasso, Gertrude Stein und andere kennenlernte.
In den 1940er Jahren kehrte er in die Vereinigten Staaten zurück, wo er neben dem Komponieren von Musik auch in der New York Herald Tribune über Musik schrieb. Dazu gehört unter anderem Virgil Thomsons feine, neoromantische Violinsonate.
