Rodion Schtschedrin komponierte zu Leo Tolstois Roman »Anna Karenina« eine ergreifende Ballettmusik. Schtschedrins Frau, die russische Primaballerina Maya Plisetskaya feierte mit diesem Ballett 1971 ihr choreographisches Debüt. Nach der Uraufführung wurde das Ballett in der originalen Orchesterbesetzung unter Yuri Tmirkanov aufgenommen und ist jetzt als glanzvolle Wiederentdeckung veröffentlicht.
