Richard Rodney Bennett war über die letzten fünf Jahrzehnte eine Leitfigur unter den Komponisten. Sein 70. Geburtstag führte zu verstärktem Interesse an seinen musikalischen Werken. Die vorliegende Veröffentlichung beinhaltet zwei Premieren: »Reflections on a Sixteenth Century Tune« sowie die Auftragskompostion des Prince of Wales »Reflections on a Scottisch Folk Song« für die Königin Mutter.

Von der Prätention der Modernität hat Bennett sich offensichtlich schon länger befreit, seine Musik findet ihren Weg ziemlich direkt ins Gemüt des Hörers. Sie verlangt eine klangsinnliche, ausdrucksintensive Darstellung, und Richard Hickox bleibt ihr in dieser Hinsicht nichts schuldig.«
