René Maillard, der 1955 mit dem Prix de Rome ausgezeichnet wurde, erlangte als junger französischer Komponist Berühmtheit mit Werken wie dem virtuosen, barock inspirierten Concerto Grosso und dem Concerto da Camera Nr. 2, das klassische und volkstümliche Elemente verbindet, bevor er eine Karriere als Manager außerhalb der Musikwelt einschlug.
Seit seiner Rückkehr zur Komposition im Jahr 2000 hat Maillard weiterhin neue Werke von Kraft und Schönheit geschaffen, wie etwa Surviving after Hiroshima, das auf der dramatischen wahren Geschichte von Kyoko Hama basiert.
