In einer 6CD-Box veröffentlicht Warner Classics die neun Sinfonien des 1958 gestorbenen Ralph Vaughan Williams in der hoch gelobten Einspielung durch Sir Andrew Davis mit der BBC Symphony, die für die “British Line“ bei Teldec entstanden waren. Obwohl Vaughan Williams vorwiegend für seine Sinfonien bekannt ist, schrieb er auch eine Anzahl teils sakraler Chorwerke und auch Opern und Theater-Musik. Seine “Fantasia On Greensleeves“ (1934) war ursprünglich eine Zwischenmusik aus seiner Shakespeare-Oper, die Overtüre “The Wasps“ entstand 1909 als Auftragskomposition für das Greek Play Comittee in Cambridge. Seine absolut modernen Kompositionen verwurzelte Vaughan Williams in einer unmittelbar zugänglichen modalen Tonalität, die britischer Folklore und Kirchenmusik entlehnt ist. Für den Konzertsaal schuf er überaus bildhafte Kompositionen, die heute zum Kernbestand des britischen Konzertrepertoires zählen. Die Box 'Vaughan Williams - The Symphonies' präsentiert die Höhepunkte aus dem faszinierenden Œvre des wohl 'britischsten' Komponisten.
