Philip Spratley, geboren 1942 in Nottinghamshire, hat seine Wurzeln im englischen Volkslied und seine Kompositionen erinnern stark an die Landschaft – obwohl sie von einer rhythmischen Lebendigkeit und Dynamik beseelt sind, die an Schostakowitsch, Britten und Tippett erinnert.

Spratleys Musik ist auch reich an einprägsamen Melodien, und seine Fähigkeit, Melodien mit dem Klang von Volksliedern darüber zu schreiben, zeigt, dass er ein wahrer Erbe von Holst und Vaughan Williams ist.
