Mit Schwanensee hat der Russe ein unsterbliches Stück Tanztheater geschrieben, das trotz seiner seit langem unangefochtenen Position im Repertoire anfänglich keinen durchschlagenden Erfolg hatte. Erst zwei Jahre nach Tschaikowskis Tod und einigen strukturellen und choreografischen Überarbeitungen wurde es als das Meisterwerk anerkannt, als das wir es heute sehen und hören.
