Zu Lebzeiten war er vor allem als unermüdlicher Konzertpianist bekannt; seit seinem Tod im Jahr 1961 (das Datum überrascht viele Leute, die glauben, er sei irgendwann um den Zweiten Weltkrieg herum gestorben) beruht sein Ruf eher auf seinen brillant orchestrierten Arrangements von Volksliedern (Country Gardens & Shepherd’s Hey zum Beispiel) und Graingers Bedeutung als Komponist an sich wurde weitgehend ignoriert.
