Mit diesen Worten charakterisierte sich eine der zentralen Figuren der deutschen Musiklandschaft, der Komponist Paul Hindemith. Der Allroundmusiker, ausgebildete Geiger und Bratschist, Musiktheoretiker und hoch geschätzte Dirigent hat ein enormes Œuvre hinterlassen. Zu den Werken, die im Repertoire des internationalen Opern- und Konzertbetriebs eine herausragende Stellung einnehmen, zählen u. a. die Sinfonie Mathis der Maler, Die vier Temperamente, das Ballet Nobilissima visione und die Sinfonischen Metamorphosen über Themen von Weber. Diese und weitere Kompositionen sind Bestandteil dieses musikalischen Porträts mit Aufnahmen aus den 1940er- und 1950er-Jahren, bei denen keine Geringerer als der Komponist selbst am Pult gestanden hat. Mit von der Partie sind neben dem Philharmonia Orchestra die Berliner Philharmoniker, mit denen Hindemith über lange Jahre eng verbunden war.«
