Um 1600 erhielt John Dowland ein musikalisches Geschenk: eine Pavane aus der Feder seines Schutzherrn Moritz Landgraf von Hessen zu Ehren des „englischen Orpheus“. Hundert Jahre später erschien posthum eine Sammlung von Liedern Henry Purcells unter dem Titel „Orpheus Britannicus“. Und auch, wenn da nun wiederum 300 Jahre dazwischen liegen, ist der Mythos doch immer noch greifbar. Diese beiden Giganten der englischen Liedkomposition vermögen es bis heute, mit ihren Schöpfungen zu rühren – sowohl zu Tränen wie zum ausgelassenen Tanz, wie Emma Kirkby in ihrem Kommentar schreibt. Und so durchmisst sie in ihrem Programm auch das ganze Spektrum der Emotion von Melancholie und Verzweiflung über finstere Dramtik bis zur Freude.

FonoForum 07/11: "Natürlich singt sie mit souveräner Abgeklärtheit, und in Purcells "Oh lead me to some peaceful gloom" verfügt sie über Deklamationsraffinessen, die diese schlichte Musik zu einem musikdramatischen Ereignis machen. Das Lautenspiel von Jakob Lindberg hingegen ist ein Ereignis. Er benutzt ein Instrument aus dem Jahr 1590, wahrscheinlich die älteste spielbare Laute. Der Klang ist rund und volltönend, und Lindberg setzt die Töne mit der Präzision und Virtuosität eines Cembalisten. Nur klingt es viel schöner."
