Ned Rorems Klarheit des emotionalen Ausdrucks passt perfekt zum »hauchigen Gold« der Flöte.
Diese Stücke decken einen Großteil der Karriere des Komponisten ab und reichen vom frühen Mountain Song, der den Geist eines ländlichen Volksliedes aus Kentucky einfängt, bis zu den meditativen und spektakulären Four Prayers.
Rorem arbeitete eng mit den Interpreten dieser Aufnahme zusammen und war »geehrt, von ihnen so blendend repräsentiert zu werden«, wobei er den Flötisten Fenwick Smith als »Faun und Daphnis in einem« beschrieb.
