Les Sylphides gilt als das erste handlungsfreie Ballett des 20. Jahrhunderts und geht auf die Musik Chopins zurück. Coppélias anhaltende Popularität ist besonders der Partitur mit ihrer deskriptiven Musik zu verdanken. Giselle war das erste Ballett, das für Rudolf Nurejew nach seiner Flucht aus der russischen Heimat ausgesucht wurde. Seine Partnerin war die große Marot Foneyn.
