Die Sonaten für Viola da gamba und Cembalo von Johann Sebastian Bach wie auch die Sonaten für Violoncello und Klavier von Max Reger stellen in ihrer jeweiligen Epoche einsame Gipfelhöhen dar. Das rechtfertigt, die Werke in einer Gesamtaufnahme einander gegenüberzustellen und nicht enzyklopädisch nur Bach bzw. nur Reger zu veröffentlichen. Eingespielt auf dieser Folge sind die beiden jeweils ersten Werke des Genres vom jungen Cellisten Martin Rummel, der auf Musicaphon mittlerweile schon mit neun CDs vertreten ist und der immer wieder »Faszination durch sein brillantes Spiel« bewirkt (Kronenzeitung). Begleitet wird er von Elizabeth Hopkins, die von der Süddeutschen Zeitung bereits eine Einschätzung als »brillante Pianistin« erfuhr.
