Die Initialzündung zu der lebenslangen, engen Beziehung Jordi Savalls zur Musik von Marin Marais geschah in seiner Heimatstadt Barcelona: In einer Musikalienhandlung namens »Casa Beethoven« entdeckte 1959 der 17jährige, der seit etwas mehr als zwei Jahren Cello spielte, Noten von Marin Marais für die Gambe. 1966 machte sich Savall daran, im Selbststudium das Instrument zu erobern, dessen unbestrittener Meister er heute ist. Die Musik von Marin Marais mit ihrer einzigartigen Vielfalt hat ihn stets in ihrem Bann gehalten.
