Die Kopten sind die eingeborenen Christen Ägyptens. Die koptische Sprache, die nur noch in der Liturgie verwendet wird, ist eine Fortentwicklung des Altägyptischen, das seit den Pharaonen gesprochen wurde. Wissenschaftliche Forschungen haben ergeben, dass die koptische Kirchenmusik die älteste des Christentums ist. Aufgrund des bewahrenden Wesens der Koptischen Kirche ist diese Musik – von Priestern und Vorsängern von Generation zu Generation mündlich überliefert – fast unverändert bis heute erhalten geblieben. Zu hören sind hier sowohl Gesänge zu Weihnachten als auch für die Passionszeit.
