Selbst für einen aus dem Geist des Barock geschulten Musiker wie William Christie hat es wohl Jahre des Studiums gebraucht, um dieses Meisterwerk, das schon bei der Uraufführung für Furore sorgte, in all seinen Facetten zu durchdringen. Haydn knüpft im weitesten Sinne an den zu seiner Zeit noch sehr populären Messias von Händel an, entwickelt jedoch eine ganz eigene Formsprache und neue Möglichkeiten der Instrumentation, die weit die Türen zur Romantik aufstoßen und eine große Herausforderung für das authentische Instrumentarium eines auf alten Instrumenten musizierenden Ensembles darstellen.
