Gegründet 1836 gehört die Huddersfield Choral Society heute zu den führenden britischen Laienchören und hat bereits an zahlreichen CD-Projekten mitgewirkt. Auf ihrer vierten Produktion für SIGNUM CLASSICS macht der Chor mit dem Passionsoratorium "The Crucifixion" von John Stainer (1840-1901) bekannt. Formal orientiert sich Stainer an den Passionsoratorien Bachs mit ihrem Wechsel von Arien, Rezitativen, Chören und Chorälen. Als Organist beschränkt er sich allerdings ganz auf sein ureigenes Instrument als Begleitung und erzählt die Passion Christi natürlich mit den stilistischen Mitteln seiner Zeit.
