Fast alle Klavierwerke Turinas, von denen es über hundert gibt, sind kurze, fast Miniaturen, wenige davon länger als fünf Minuten. Turina selbst erklärte dies wie folgt: Obwohl ich bei Vincent d'Indy an der Schola Cantorum studiert hatte, wusste ich, oder besser gesagt, ich lernte von Albéniz, dass für spanische Komponisten keine reine Form, auch nicht die Postromantik, erreichbar war. Falla dachte das Gleiche, und da wir nicht durch fremde Kriterien belastet waren, konnten wir andere Wege gehen".
Als stolzer Andalusier gestand Turina offen die lokale Inspiration hinter seinem Werk ein: "Die beständigen Parameter, die ich als Richtschnur für meine Arbeit empfand, entsprechen in Wirklichkeit etwas sehr Informellem: der andalusischen Landschaft ... Ich konnte mich aufgrund meiner fundierten Schola-Ausbildung frei in ihr bewegen". Seine beschreibende Musik verzichtet jedoch auf spezifische Programme und formale Disziplin. Er selbst sagte: "Ich möchte von Liebe und Traurigkeit singen und diesen kleinen Winkel des andalusischen Geistes ausfindig machen, der in die weite Welt hinausblickt; ich habe einen Teil meines Lebens träumend gelebt, weil ich als Musiker die Melodie liebe. Dort verliert die Tragödie ihren herzzerreißenden Charakter, der Tanz wird reiner und der Wein ist nur noch Parfüm. Ich kann nicht mit einer transzendentalen Melodie am Klavier sitzen. Ich singe, was mir gefällt, und ich spüre eine Antwort."

Almost all Turina’s piano works, of which there are over a hundred, are short, almost miniature pieces, few of them more than five minutes long. Turina himself explained this as follows: ‘Despite having studied with Vincent d’Indy at the Schola Cantorum, I knew, or rather I learned from Albéniz, that no pure form, even post- Romanticism, was attainable for Spanish composers. Falla thought the same and, not being weighed down by any foreign criteria, we have been able to take different paths’.
As a proud Andalusian, Turina openly admitted the local inspiration behind his work: ‘The enduring parameters I felt to be guiding my work actually correspond to something very informal: the Andalusian landscape … I have been able to move freely within them because of my in-depth Schola training’. His descriptive music, however, renounces specific programmes and formal discipline. He himself stated, ‘I want to sing of love and sadness, searching out that little corner of the Andalusian spirit that looks out to the wider world; I have lived part of my life dreaming, because I as a musician love melody. There, tragedy loses its heart-rending edge, dance becomes purer and wine is only perfume. I cannot sit at the piano with a transcendental melody. I sing what pleases me and I feel a response.’
