Neben Manuel de Falla darf wohl Joaquín Turina (1882-1949) als einer der führenden spanischen Komponisten des 20. Jahrhunderts angesehen werden. In der CHANDOS-Reihe mit spanischer Musik stellt das BBC Philharmonic unter seinem Chefdirigenten Juanjo Mena sinfonische Musik und Vokalmusik des Komponisten vor, in denen Turina seiner Faszination für die andalusische Musik und ihre Rhythmen Ausdruck verleiht. Viele seiner Stücke vermitteln den Hörer das Gefühl von Entrückung und Verzückung, wobei in ihnen auch französische Einflüsse nachweisbar sind. Kein Wunder, denn Turina lebte von 1905 bis 1914 in Paris, wo er bei d'Indy studierte und mit Ravel und Debussy bekannt wurde.
