Die Streichquartette von Ignaz Pleyel nehmen einen zentralen Platz in seinem fruchtbaren musikalischen Schaffen ein. Pleyels Interesse an diesem Medium ist nicht überraschend, wenn man bedenkt, dass er in den 1770er Jahren mehrere Jahre bei Joseph Haydn studierte. Was bei einem Komponisten, der routinemäßig als Ableitung abgetan wird und sich weitgehend damit begnügt, den Stil seines Lehrers nachzumachen, noch überraschender ist, ist, dass Haydns Einfluss auf seine Herangehensweise an die Quartettkomposition eher weniger ausgeprägt war, als man erwarten würde. Pleyel war offensichtlich nicht davon überzeugt, dass Haydn alle Antworten hatte, und dieser Zweifel manifestierte sich schon sehr früh in seiner Karriere.
Die geheimnisvolle Präsenz Haydns ist in all diesen großartigen Werken zu hören, aber es gibt auch Passagen, die bereits auf die Quartette Beethovens hinzuweisen scheinen. Sie sind eine bemerkenswerte Leistung für einen jungen Komponisten, und es ist eine der grausamen Launen des Schicksals, dass Werke von solcher Vitalität und Phantasie so lange in Vergessenheit geraten konnten.

The string quartets of Ignaz Pleyel occupy a central place in his prolific musical output. Pleyel’s interest in the medium is unsurprising given that he studied with Joseph Haydn for several years in the 1770s. What is more surprising in a composer routinely dismissed as derivative and largely content to ape the style of his teacher is that Haydn’s influence on his approach to quartet composition was rather less marked than one might expect. Pleyel, clearly, was not convinced that Haydn had all the answers and this doubt manifested itself very early in his career.
The ghostly presence of Haydn can be heard throughout all these splendid works but there are passages too that seem to look forward to the quartets of Beethoven. They are a remarkable achievement for a young composer and it is one of the cruel quirks of fate that works of such vitality and imagination could be forgotten for so long.
