Die noble Kombination der Kornette und Sackbuts (Vorgänger der Posaune) war eine der ausdruckvollsten und vielseitigsten instrumentalen Klangfarben, die den Komponisten des sechzehnten und siebzehnten Jahrhunderts zur Verfügung standen. Es war ein Klang, der in manch einem musikalischen Zusammenhang gehört werden konnte: Zum Beispiel im Zusammenspiel oder Wechsel zu den Klängen der extravaganten Gottesdienste in den mächtigen italienischen und spanischen Kirchen (vor allem des Markusdoms in Venedig); bei aristokratischer Unterhaltung wie den Intermedii im nördlichen Italien, den königlichen Maskenbällen aus dem England zur Zeit Jakobs des Ersten; oder in zeremonieller und religiöser Musik für die Höfe und freien Städte des lutherischen Deutschlands.
Seit ihrer Gründung 1982 haben „His Majestys Sagbutts and Cornetts“ dieses überaus variierte Reich der Musik erforscht und wiederbelebt, und die gegenwärtige Aufnahme stellt in einer musikalischen Grand Tour durch diese drei Länder, in denen Kornette und Sackbuts ihre Blütezeit erlebten, einen Querschnitt ihres Repertoires dar.

The works featured comprehensively survey the remarkable repertoire composed over two hundred years in Italy, Germany and Spain and reveal an astonishing breadth of atmosphere. The musical pomp and splendour of bygone royal ceremony can be answered by the most tender and delicate of chamber music: all legitimate repertoire for what was in the past recognized as the most versatile of all instrumental ensembles.
