Federico Mompou steht als Komponist in der Tradition der nationalen spanischen Schule von Granados, Albeniz und Falla, doch sein Stil ist höchst individuell, phantasievoller, kontemplativer, spiritueller und »einfacher« im positiven Sinne. Man könnte ihn als den »spanischen Satie« bezeichnen, allerdings ohne die Exzentrik und Ironie des französischen Komponisten.
Der Pianist Mompou ist ein Meister seiner eigenen Werke, sie klingen wie an Ort und Stelle geschaffen, mit großer Freiheit und quasi improvisatorisch.
