It is only relatively recently that Fanny Mendelssohn-Hensel has stepped out of the shadow of her more famous sibling Felix. Nearly all of her five hundred or so compositions remained unpublished during her lifetime, despite their undeniable beauty, lyricism and passion. This volume of piano music spans almost her entire adult life, from youthful experiments to music written less than a year before her untimely death, giving the listener a whirlwind tour of a much-underrated composer.

Die Auswahl erweist sich als besonders geglückt, denn sie erlaubt den Entwicklungsprozess der Künstlerin über einen Zeitraum von rund 20 Jahren zu verfolgen und stellt sowohl große Formen vor wie die Sonaten in c- und g-Moll als auch salonhafte Kleinode. Der jungen kanadischen Pianistin Heather Schmidt gelingt es bestens, die nicht unbeträchtlichen Herausforderungen dieser Klavierstücke zu meistern: Das Allegro molto agitato von 1823, eine virtuose Oktavetüde, erfüllt die Pianistin mit einer unerbittlichen Dramatik, während sie für das zarte Notturno g-Moll die richtigen melancholisch-verhangenen Klangfarben findet, um die nuancenreiche Poesie dieses Werkes voll zu entfalten."Disk 1 von 1 (CD)
