Das substantiellste Werk ist das 'Concerto'. Es wurde ursprünglich für Klavier solo geschrieben und ist hier in einer Fassung für Klavier und Orchester zu hören. Ursprünglich war es Teil von 20 Studien für Soloklavier, einem außergewöhnlichen Werk in Moll-Tonarten. Zwei umfangreiche Abschnitte beschrieb Alkan als "Konzert" und "Symphonie", wobei das "Konzert" in drei miteinander verbundene Abschnitte unterteilt ist. Der Orchesterteil wurde von Karl Klindworth, einem prominenten Dirigenten in Berlin und Wagners meist bewunderten Bearbeiter seiner Orchesterpartituren für Klavier solo, hinzugefügt. Das Konzert in seiner endgültigen Fassung wurde 1902 uraufgeführt. Es sollte darauf hingewiesen werden, dass Alkan zwar Klindworths Werk sah und offensichtlich gutheißt, seine Änderungen jedoch so dramatisch waren, dass er die ursprüngliche Klavierkomposition stark veränderte.
Die Kammerkonzerte für Klavier und Orchester stammen aus seinen jüngeren Jahren, das zweite hat er für Klavier solo transkribiert. Das erste, datiert 1831, dauert in drei miteinander verbundenen Abschnitten weniger als 15 Minuten. Das zweite wurde zwei Jahre später komponiert, wiederum in drei miteinander verbundenen Abschnitten, aber dieses Mal nur halb so lang wie das erste! Das dritte Konzert, das auf dieser CD zu hören ist, ist in der Tat eine Rekonstruktion eines Andante von Hugh Macdonald, die etwas mehr als 5 Minuten dauert.

It should be pointed out that while Alkan saw and obviously approved Klindworth's work, his changes were so dramatic that he greatly changed the original piano composition.
The chamber concertos for piano and orchestra come from his younger years, the second of which he transcribed for solo piano. The first dated 1831, in three linked sections, lasts for less than 15 minutes. The Second was composed two years later, again in three linked sections, but this time lasting only half the length of the First! The Third Concerto heard on this disc is, in fact, a reconstruction by Hugh Macdonald of an Andante which lasts for little over 5 minutes.
