1753, als Bach diese Stücke komponierte, war er schon mehr als ein Jahrzehnt am Hof Friedrich II. in Potsdam beschäftigt. Er hatte sich große Reputation erworben und zog ständig eine ganze Reihe von Studenten an. Für deren Unterricht komponierte er die „Achtzehn Probe-Stücke in sechs Sonaten“ als Anhang zu seinem bis heute wichtigen Lehrwerk „Versuch über die wahre Art, das Clavier zu spielen“. Daher hat jedes der 18 Stücke seinen ganz eigenen Charakter und könnte gut auch für sich allein stehen. Und obwohl es „nur“ Unterrichtswerke sind, ist ihre musikalische Qualität ganz außerordentlich. Spányi meint sogar, sie gehörten zu den gehaltvollsten Werken des Komponisten überhaupt.
