Arnold Bax: Symphonie Nr.6 on CD

In dem Jahrzehnt, das die ursprüngliche Fassung der Sommermusik von ihrer Revision trennte, vollendete Bax fünf seiner sieben Sinfonien und fand sich von einem deutschen Kritiker als " Kopf der modernen englischen Schule" gefeiert. Der langsame Satz der Sechsten Sinfonie, und vielleicht auch der größte Teil des ersten Satzes, hatte als Teil einer Bratschensonate begonnen, die Bax 1933 zu schreiben begonnen hatte. Er erkannte jedoch bald, dass sich das Material besser für eine orchestrale Bearbeitung eignete, und die Sinfonie wurde am 10. Februar 1935 in Morar an der Westküste Schottlands vollendet.
Der erste Satz beginnt mit einem Präludium, in dem eine wiederholte Figur im Bass ein marschartiges Thema auf Hörnern und Holzbläsern begleitet. Das turbulente Allegro, das einer Reihe grandioser Akkorde folgt, basiert auf dem vorhergehenden Material und weicht schließlich einem langsameren Abschnitt mit einem neuen Thema, das von drei Flöten im Unisono gespielt wird. Die schnelle Musik wird für einen stürmischen Durchführungsteil fortgesetzt, gefolgt von einer kurzen Pause, bevor der Satz in einem Wirbelsturm wie das Zuschlagen einer Tür zu seinem emphatischen Ende eilt.
Der langsame Satz basiert auf zwei gegensätzlichen Ideen: einer expressiven Melodie, die zuerst auf Streichern zu hören ist, und dann einem sanften Trompetenthema mit einem für die schottische Volksmusik charakteristischen "Scotch Snap". Die Entwicklung dieses Materials gipfelt in zwei marschartigen Abschnitten, der erste rau und unheilvoll, der zweite ein ruhiger, stattlicher Zug, der in die friedliche Coda mündet.
Das dreiteilige Finale (Einleitung, Scherzo und Trio und Epilog) ist das einzige unter Bax' Sinfonien, das ruhig eröffnet wird. Die gewundene melodische Linie der Solo-Klarinette, aus der der Satz wächst, wird von den Streichern, nun mit begleitenden Harmonien, wiederholt, bevor die Holzbläser ein neues Thema liturgischer Natur ankündigen, das der "Sine Nomine"-Melodie in Vaughan Williams' später fünfter Sinfonie sehr ähnlich ist. Am Ende der Einleitung wird das Tempo allmählich beschleunigt und mündet in das Scherzo, in dem das Eröffnungsmaterial nun in eine Art symphonischen Jig voller nervöser Energie verwandelt wird. Einen Kontrast dazu bildet ein langsamerer Abschnitt (das Trio), nach dem das Scherzo mit einem unbeweglich strengen Rhythmus seinen kopflastigen Verlauf wieder aufnimmt. Es kommt zu einem auffallend dramatischen Moment, in dem die Hörner wütend schmettern und die Streicher über ihnen ein Thema aus Sibelius' Tapiola singen, ein Werk, das Bax beim ersten Hören zu Tränen gerührt hatte. (Die Bewunderung der beiden Komponisten beruhte auf Gegenseitigkeit: Sibelius würdigte die Widmung von Bax' fünfter Symphonie und nannte ihn "einen der großen Männer unserer Zeit"). Es kommt zu einem gewaltigen Höhepunkt, bei dem das liturgische Thema von den Blechbläsern triumphierend herausgeschmettert wird, und dies führt zum friedlichen Epilog, in dem die rätselhafte Eröffnungsmusik der Klarinette durch das Solohorn in etwas von erlesener Schönheit verwandelt wird, vor einem Hintergrund von plätschernder Harfe und geteilten Streichern. Die musikalische Textur wird allmählich spärlicher, und der Satz verklingt langsam, um zu einem Ende zu führen, das manche nicht nur als Bax' symphonisches Meisterwerk, sondern als eine der schönsten Symphonien des zwanzigsten Jahrhunderts betrachten.

During the decade that separated the original version of Summer Music from its revision, Bax completed five of his seven symphonies and found himself acclaimed by a German critic as ‘the head of the modern English school’. The slow movement of the Sixth Symphony, and perhaps also the bulk of the first movement, had begun life as part of a Viola Sonata that Bax had started writing in 1933. He soon realised, however, that the material was more suited to orchestral treatment, and the symphony was completed in Morar, on the west coast of Scotland, on 10th February 1935.
The first movement opens with a prelude in which a repeated figure in the bass provides the accompaniment to a march-like theme on horns and woodwind. The turbulent Allegro, which follows a series of grandiose chords, is based on the preceding material and eventually gives way to a slower section with a new theme played by three flutes in unison. The fast music resumes for a stormy development section, followed by a brief respite before the movement rushes on in a whirlwind to its emphatic ending, like the slamming of a door.
The slow movement is founded on two contrasting ideas: an expressive melody first heard on strings, and then a soft trumpet theme with a ‘Scotch snap’, characteristic of Scottish folk-music. Development of this material culminates in two march-like sections, the first harsh and baleful, the second a calm, stately procession leading to the peaceful coda.
The tripartite finale (Introduction, Scherzo and Trio, and Epilogue) is the only one among Bax’s symphonies to open quietly. The solo clarinet’s sinuous melodic line, from which the movement grows, is repeated by the strings, now with accompanying harmonies, before the woodwind announce a new theme of a liturgical nature, very similar to the ‘Sine Nomine’ melody in Vaughan Williams’s later Fifth Symphony. At the end of the Introduction the pace gradually quickens, leading into the Scherzo, in which the opening material is now transformed into a kind of symphonic jig full of nervous energy. Contrast is provided by a slower section (the Trio), after which the Scherzo resumes its headlong course with an inflexibly rigid rhythm. A strikingly dramatic moment occurs with the horns braying furiously and the strings above them singing out a theme taken from Sibelius’s Tapiola, a work that had reduced Bax to tears when he first heard it. (The two composers’ admiration was mutual: in acknowledging the dedication of Bax’s Fifth Symphony, Sibelius called him ‘one of the great men of our time’.) There is a tremendous climax, with the liturgical theme blared out triumphantly by the brass, and this leads to the peaceful Epilogue, in which the clarinet’s enigmatic opening music is transformed by the solo horn into something of exquisite beauty set against a backdrop of rippling harp and divided strings. The musical texture becomes gradually sparer and the movement fades slowly away, bringing to a close what some regard not only as Bax’s symphonic masterpiece but as one of the finest symphonies from the twentieth century.
