Bax vollendete seine Symphonie Nr. 1 in Es-Dur, nicht die erste, die er geschrieben hatte, 1921 im Klavierauszug und beendete die Orchestrierung des Werkes bis zum folgenden Jahr. Der langsame Satz, den er für seine ursprünglich dritte Klaviersonate geschrieben hatte, wurde durch einen Orchestersatz ersetzt, der die Ereignisse der letzten Jahre besser widerspiegelte. Die Sinfonie kann als Reaktion nicht nur auf die Tragödie des gerade zu Ende gegangenen Krieges gehört werden, sondern mehr noch auf die Tragödie Irlands und den frustrierten Idealismus und die Opfer des Osteraufstandes von 1916. Das Werk ist John Ireland gewidmet.

The symphony may be heard as a reaction not only to the tragedy of the war that had just finished, but even more to the tragedy of Ireland and the frustrated idealism and sacrifice of the Easter Rising of 1916. The work is dedicated to John Ireland.
