Über Grétrys sechs jugendliche Streichquartette op. 3 ist nur wenig bekannt. Sie scheinen komponiert und aufgeführt worden zu sein, als der Lütticher Komponist in Rom lebte, und sind seine einzige Kammermusikveröffentlichung. Diese anmutigen und temperamentvollen Stücke wurden wahrscheinlich vom damaligen Publikum, das die Anfänge einer stilistischen Erneuerung mit Schwerpunkt auf Expressivität und Eleganz spürte, gut aufgenommen.
