Scarlatti schrieb nicht weniger als 783 Solokantaten, die meisten für Sopran und Continuo. Zahlreiche Stücke waren bereits zu seinen Lebzeiten aber in mehreren Stimmlagenvarianten im Umlauf. Die für die Nachwelt interessantesten Werke sind die Kantaten mit obligaten Instrumenten. Die Musik zeugt aufgrund der Textbehandlung von einer reichen Phantasie. Es wurde zum Markenzeichen des Komponisten, wie der mit Textabschnitten umgeht und sie musikalisch-dramatisch deutet.
