This is the final volume of Heisenberg's Collected Works. It contains his papers on a (nonlinear) unified theory of elementary particles, as well as his contribution to superconductivity and multiparticle production. Especially interesting is the first group of papers, which is split intotwo sections dealing with, firstly, the formulation of the famous nonlinear spinor equation and, secondly, its applications. Among others the reader willfind a thorough discussion of Heisenberg's collaboration with W. Pauli on these matters. Illuminating annotations to the various sections in this volume have been provided by H. Koppe, R. Hagedorn and the editors.
Biography (Hans-Peter Dürr)
Prof., PhD, Dr. phil, h.c. Hans-Peter Dürr, geb. am 7.10.1929 in Stuttgart, Physiker, Schüler und Freund von Werner Heisenberg, war bis Herbst 1997 Direktor des Werner-Heisenberg-Instituts am Max-Planck-Institut für Physik und Astrophysik in München. 1987 wurde er mit dem Alternativen Nobelpreis ausgezeichnet. 1995 erhielt er als Mitglied von Pugwash International den Friedensnobelpreis. Dürr ist Begründer der Initiative 'Global Challenges Network', einer Organisation, die ein Netz aus Projekten und Gruppen knüpft, die konstruktiv und gemeinsam an der Bewältigung der Probleme arbeiten, die uns und damit unsere natürliche Umwelt bedrohen.
