Navy during World War I. She was used to transport Allied personnel and cargo in support of the European fighting front. Post-war she was returned to her owners. S. S. Cacique, a 6, 202 gross ton commercial freighter, was built in 1910 by Short Brothers Company, at Sunderland, England. She was owned by the New York and Pacific Steamship Company of New York City, the ship was transferred to the Navy from the U. S. Shipping Board 19 August 1918, and commissioned the same day as USS Cacique (ID # 2213), Lieutenant Commander C. H. Winnett, USNRF, in command.
