Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. Usplash is a software project in the Ubuntu community that replaces the scrolling-text screens that appear while booting a Linux-based computer with a graphical splash screen. It was designed to replace Bootsplash, which did the same thing on the kernel space level. Since usplash operates in user space, it can be updated without recompiling the kernel. Usplash uses the Linux framebuffer interface or, alternatively, direct VESA access to display the splash screen. In Ubuntu 9.10 "Karmic Koala", Usplash is only used in the preliminary stages of booting, after which XSplash takes over.
