Biografie (Uri Avnery)
Uri Avnery wurde 1923 als Helmut Ostermann Beckum/Westfalen geboren und emigrierte 1933 mit seinen Eltern nach Palästina. Im israelischen Unabhängigkeitskrieg von 1948 kämpfte er als Soldat und seine Kriegsmemoiren machten ihn in Israel zum Staatsfeind Nummer eins. Von 1950 bis 1990 war er Inhaber und Herausgeber der Wochenzeitung Haolam Hazeh (Diese Welt), die sich für einen palästinensischen Staat neben Israel einsetzte. Er war insgesamt zehn Jahre Abgeordneter im israelischen Parlament und arbeitete als friedenspolitischer Berater von internationalen Politikern wie Bruno Kreisky. Bereits 1973 initiierte Avnery geheime Kontakte zur PLO und traf und traf sich 1982 als erster Israeli mit Jassir Arafat im belagerten Beirut. 1993 gründete Avnery mit anderen die Friedensorganisation Gush Shalom (Friedensblock). Als Buchautor und Journalist erhielt er zahlreiche Auszeichnungen, u.a. den Alternativen Friedensnobelpreis. Er lebt in Tel Aviv.
