Main Street (1920) by Sinclair Lewis is a satirical novel that critiques small-town American life in the early 20th century. The story follows Carol Milford, an idealistic young woman from the city who marries Dr. Will Kennicott and moves with him to his hometown of Gopher Prairie, Minnesota. Hoping to bring culture, beauty, and progressive reform to the dull and conservative town, Carol soon becomes disillusioned. Her attempts at change are resisted by the townspeople, who value tradition, conformity, and routine over innovation. Through Carol's struggles, Lewis exposes the narrow-mindedness, mediocrity, and resistance to change in small-town America, while also capturing the loneliness of individuals who dream of something greater.

Biography

Harry Sinclair Lewis wurde am 7. Februar 1885 in Sauk Center (Minnesota/USA) geboren. Der Arztsohn besuchte die Universität Yale. Anschließend arbeitete er als Journalist und im Verlagswesen. Er nahm 1906 an dem von Upton Sinclair initiierten kooperativen, utopisch-sozialistischen Experiment "Helicon Home Colony" teil. Lewis gilt als bedeutender humanistischer Realist in der Literatur: In seinen zahlreichen gesellschaftskritischen Romanen entwarf er ein satirisches Bild des amerikanischen Mittelstandes und analysierte scharfsinnig die intellektuelle und charakterliche Deformierung sowie den Abbau zwischenmenschlicher Beziehungen jener Bürger, die sich als wahre Repräsentanten der amerikanischen Nation auszugeben versuchten. Der Autor erhielt 1930 als erster Bürger der USA den Nobelpreis für Literatur. Harry Sinclair Lewis verbrachte seine letzten Lebensjahre in Florenz und starb am 10. Januar 1951 in Rom.
