Rudolf Christoph Eucken (1846-1926) war ein deutscher Philosoph und Nobelpreisträger. Er veröffentlichte zahlreiche bedeutende Schriften, darunter vor allem Arbeiten über die Philosophie der idealen Weltanschauung, aufgrund derer ihm 1908 der Nobelpreis für Literatur verliehen wurde. Sein von Platon und Johann Gottlieb Fichte beeinflusstes literarisches Schaffen machte ihn zu einem der Urheber der neuidealistischen Bewegung.Rudolf Christoph Eucken studierte Philosophie, klassische Philologie und alte Geschichte in Göttingen und Berlin. 1866 promovierte er und war daraufhin einige Jahre als Gymnasiallehrer in Husum, Berlin und Frankfurt/Main tätig, bevor er 1871 als ordentlicher Professor der Philosophie und Pädagogik an die Universität Basel berufen wurde. In Basel lernte er auch Friedrich Nietzsche und Jacob Burckhardt kennen. 1874 ging er nach Jena, um dort eine Professur für Philosophie anzunehmen. 1920 trat er in den Ruhestand.
