The Raid on Grand Pre occurred during Queen Anne's War when New England forces from Boston on the village of Grand Pre, a community in Acadia in present-day Nova Scotia. The raid was in retaliation for the February 1704 French and Indian raid on Deerfield in the English Province of Massachusetts Bay. Colonel Benjamin Church was the leader of the New England force of 500 men. The raid lasted three days, between June 20-22, 1704, and formed part of a larger expedition by Church against a number of other Acadian communities. Massachusetts Governor Joseph Dudley sent Church to Acadia on a raiding expedition to avenge the French and Indian Raid on Deerfield.
