Malaria is caused by a single-celled parasite belonging to the genus Plasmodium. Five Plasmodium species can infect humans, with Plasmodium falciparum being the deadliest. The parasite's life cycle is complex, alternating between female Anopheles mosquitoes and humans. The journey begins when an infected mosquito bites a human. Plasmodium sporozoites, injected with the mosquito's saliva, travel to the liver, where they mature and multiply. These mature forms, called merozoites, rupture the liver cells and invade red blood cells. Inside the red blood cells, the parasites undergo further multiplication, eventually rupturing the cells and releasing a new generation of merozoites. This cycle of invasion and replication causes the characteristic symptoms of malaria: fever, chills, sweating, and flu-like illness.
