Im Jahre 2003 erbrachte die mit fast 10.000 m² bis dahin größte Stadtkerngrabung in Göttingen wesentliche Erkenntnisse zur frühmittelalterlichen Keimzelle der heutigen Stadt mit vielen Grubenhäusern und Handwerksspuren. Im Bereich der im Jahr 953 erstgenannten Siedlung "Gutingi", der Göttingen seinen Namen verdankt, wurden während der Arbeiten auf der Fundstelle "Kurze Geismarstraße 26-30" tausende Keramikfragmente geborgen. Über Jahre hinweg wurde dieses Fundgut in akribischer Kleinarbeit systematisch erfaßt. Unterschiedlichste metrische, technologische und morphologische Parameter wurden statistisch ausgewertet. So war es erstmals möglich, auf breiter Materiabasis und Datenbasis die lokale Genese früh mittelalterlicher und hochmittelalterlicher Keramik in Göttingen nachzuzeichnen und in einen überregionalen Kontext zu stellen. Dabei steht der Buchtitel für den Wandel von grober handgemachter Irdenware zu den ersten in professionellem Handwerk hergestellten Töpferwaren. Der vorliegende Band beleuchtet über ein halbes Jahrtausend mittelalterlicher Keramikentwicklung in Göttingen von den Anfängen des Dorfes "Gutingi" im 7./8. Jh. bis in die Zeit der Stadtgründung um 1180.

In 2003, the largest city centre excavation at Göttingen to date, covering almost 10, 000 m², yielded significant findings on the Early Medieval nucleus of today's city with many sunken-featured buildings and traces of crafts. In the area of the settlement "Gutingi", which was first mentioned in A. D. 953 and to which Göttingen owes its name, thousands of pottery fragments were recovered during the work at the "Kurze Geismarstraße 26-30" site. Over the years, these artefacts were systematically recorded in painstaking detail. A wide variety of metric, technological and morphological parameters were statistically analysed. This made it possible for the first time to trace the local genesis of Early and High Medieval pottery in Göttingen on a broad material and data basis and to place it in a supra-regional context. The title of the book stands for the change from crude handmade earthenware to the first pottery produced by professional craftspersons. The volume sheds light on over half a millennium of Medieval pottery development in Göttingen, from the beginnings of the village of "Gutingi" in the 7th / 8th century A. D. to the time of the foundation of the town around A. D. 1180.
