Er gehört zu den Begründern der Kognitionspsychologie als Fach und ist einer ihrer international führenden Vertreter und erhielt für seine Pionierleistungen in der kognitiven Psychologie zahlreiche Preise, unter anderem von der Amerikanischen Akademie der Wissenschaften und Künste und der Königlichen Akademie der Niederlanden und natürlich der American Psychological Association.
