Joe Haldeman, 1943 in Oklahoma City geboren, studierte Physik, Astronomie, Mathematik und Informatik an den Universitäten von Maryland und Iowa. 1967 wurde er zum Militär eingezogen und nach Vietnam geschickt. Die schrecklichen Erlebnisse in diesem Krieg, aus dem er schwer verwundet zurückkehrte, haben ihn zutiefst geprägt und sein Schreiben maßgeblich beeinflusst. Mit zahlreichen preisgekrönten Romanen und Erzählungen hat er sich als einer der bekanntesten SF-Autoren unserer Zeit etabliert, der wesentlich an der Renaissance der naturwissenschaftlich-technisch orientierten Science Fiction mitwirkte. Darüber hinaus hat er sich als Bühnenautor einen Namen gemacht. Joe Haldeman lebt mit seiner Frau Gay in Ormond Beach, Florida.
