Alemán reconstructs this contested landscape by bringing together well-known figures---such as María Amparo Ruiz de Burton, Loreta Janeta Velázquez, and Rafael Chacón---with overlooked participants like Miguel Otero, James Santiago Tafolla, and Federico and Adolfo Cavada.
