Over the course of evolution, multicellular animals - Metazoa - have successfully colonized every conceivable habitat on our planet, thanks to their ability to survive and adapt under adverse or changing conditions. But how is an animal's body structured to accomplish this? What organs do animals have, how do they perceive their environment, and what is the evolutionary relationship between these seemingly so different organisms?
This volume, designed as a modern practical book, presents the most important body plans of selected animals. It is intended to help all Biology students to recognize and understand the basic body shapes and structures in the respective animal groups, including the main features that have contributed to their evolutionary success, the similarities and differences, and the many different solutions that evolution has come up with for given biological problems.
The authors have consistently used focused, compact text and photographs that not only show the animals' most important external features but also explain the dissection process step by step.

Biography (Achim Paululat)
Achim Paululat, geb. 1961 in Soest /Westfalen. 198186 Studium der Chemie und Biologie in Münster; 1987-91 freier Mitarbeiter am Naturkundemuseum Münster, 1991-1992 Lehrauftrag an der Pädagogischen Hochschule Münster, 1992 Promotion am Institut für Allgemeine Zoologie und Genetik in Münster. 1992-2004 Post-Doc und wissenschaftlicher Assistent am Fachbereich Biologie der Universität Marburg, 1996 Forschungsaufenthalt an der Harvard Medical School in Boston, 2000 Habilitation in Entwicklungsbiologie und Zoologie. Seit 2004 Inhaber des Lehrstuhls für Zoologie an der Universität Osnabrück. Forschungsschwerpunkte: Entwicklungsbiologie, Drosophila, Muskel-und Herzdifferenzierung, Organogenese, Kreislaufsysteme.Biography (Günter Purschke)
Günter Purschke, geb. 1954 in Hamburg. 1973-79 Studium der Biologie und Chemie in Göttingen; 1980-83 Promotionsstudium am II. Zoologischen Institut der Universität Göttingen, 1984 Promotion an der Mathemathisch-Naturwissenschaftlichen Fakultät der Universität Göttingen. 1983-2002 Post-Doc und wissenschaftlicher Assistent am Fachbereich Biologie/Chemie der Universität Osnabrück, mehrere Forschungsreisen und -aufenthalte und Sammelexpeditionen im Ausland, 1997 Habilitation in Zoologie Schwerpunkt Spezielle Zoologie an der Universität Osnabrück. Seit 2002 Außerplanmäßiger Professor am Lehrstuhls für Zoologie an der Universität Osnabrück. Forschungsschwerpunkte: Evolution, Systematik, Stammesgeschichte und Morphologie von Ringelwürmern (Annelida) und verwandten Taxa; Phylogenie der Metazoa mit Schwerpunkt Lophotrochozoa. Mitarbeit an verschiedenen Lehrbüchern u.a. Westheide/Rieger: Spezielle Zoologie.
